Marquette-Adams Nationally Recognized With Smart Rural Community Award

Smart Rural Community Logo Marquette-Adams honored for delivering broadband-enabled solutions in sustainable agriculture, health care, tourism and education.

Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative Inc. is proud to announce that we are one of 13 rural communications firms nationwide to be honored with the title of Smart Rural Community by NTCA The Rural Broadband Association, which cited our advanced communications services and collaboration with local leaders as keys to our success.

At a gathering of more than 1,000 leaders of rural telecommunications providers hosted by NTCA, Marquette-Adams was honored with an award for deploying advanced technologies and leveraging those technologies to enable innovation in the areas of economic development, sustainable agriculture, enhanced health care, tourism and education. Our Cooperative's efforts were judged against those of dozens of other communities nationwide by a panel of experts from the fields of telecommunications, software and technology services, education, health care and economic development.

Our winning application centered around local businesses that use our fiber optic broadband network to bring jobs, tourism, premier health care and advanced agriculture to Marquette and Adams counties.

Focusing on the tourism perspective, we featured Holiday Shores Campground, located just outside Wisconsin Dells, which uses a one-gigabit connection speed to provide their guests with wireless service throughout their expansive campground via 17 wireless access points.

Also highlighted was Moundview Memorial Hospital, the largest medical center in Marquette-Adams' serving area. Through the engineering and constructing of a redundant fiber network to the clinic, we guaranteed Moundview a backup connection that will take over in the event of a primary network outage.

Allied Cooperative's use of precision agriculture also played an integral role in the application. Allied uses Marquette-Adams' broadband technology to capture satellite imagery of its clients' farm acreage. The gathered data is then used to determine nutrient and pest levels to create a layered map of consolidated data as well as to create unique recipes for fertilizers and seeds.

Nelson & Pade, Inc. is an aquaponics systems manufacturer near Montello that was instrumental in our Cooperative's Smart Rural Community achievement. Marquette-Adams' fiber broadband network allows Nelson & Pade to remotely monitor and adjust the facility's environmental variables that affect the delicate ecosystem existing between plants and fish. Our broadband service also facilitates a partnership between Nelson & Pade and the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point. In the Aquaponics Innovation Center, online courses are taught for valid credit, and students can remotely monitor actual aquaponics research environments. Day-to-day operations that were impossible due to the lack of high speed Internet availability are now commonplace thanks to the expansion of the Cooperative's communications services. Nelson & Pade is now a thriving business that employs a full-time staff of 22.

In addition to Marquette-Adams, 12 other providers and their communities in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada, were also recognized.

"Marquette-Adams is a prime example of the power of a broadband connection and a steadfast commitment to growth and prosperity," said NTCA Chief Executive Officer Shirley Bloomfield. "Not only are the people of Marquette-Adams charting their own path to a more prosperous future, they are also creating a road map for many more communities across the country to follow suit. I commend the people of Marquette-Adams for these extraordinary efforts."

The NTCA Smart Rural Community initiative recognizes and celebrates the efforts of rural telecommunications providers and their communities to deliver technologies that make rural communities vibrant places in which to live and do business. The goal of the initiative is to foster the development of Smart Rural Communities throughout rural America by recognizing trailblazers and providing resources to assist broadband providers and connected industries.

"We are pleased and excited to receive this award," said CEO/GM Jerry Schneider, who accepted the award on behalf of the Cooperative. "We have worked hard with our local leaders to ensure that our citizens have access to advanced communications and the many benefits those services enable. We look forward to building on our success for many years to come."
